Shopping Centres

Shopping centres, which are frequently referred to as ‘shopping malls’ in English speaking countries outside of the UK are large shopping complexes that feature a variety of different shops, cafes and bars. Most town centres in the UK feature one or more shopping centres and there are several very large shopping centres that are based out of towns. The Trafford centre in Manchester and the Merry Hill Centre in the Black Country are two examples of very well known shopping centres in the UK. These out of town shopping centres should not be confused with retail parks, which is a group of out of town shops housed in large warehouse style buildings that share a car park. These retail parks are quite often located very close to out of town shopping centres.

Most shopping centres will large consist of branded chain stores. Leasing out units inside shopping centres is usually very expensive and space is at a premium, especially in the most popular shopping centres, so it is unusually to see independent retailers operating out of shopping centres as only large companies can afford the leases.

New shopping centres often feature innovative design and architecture. The New Bullring centre in Birmingham is an ideal example of this and it features some highly unconventional buildings. Many people blame the decline of smaller local businesses on the popularity of large shopping centres as the typically have shops selling the majority of common consumer products under one roof.
